40th Anniversary Roe v Wade Vermont Advocacy Day

Thanks for being there! – Over 50 activists and legislators convened at the State House for important Speak-Out in support of Roe v. Wade!

Tuesday, January 22nd, marked the 40 anniversary of the Supreme Court’s historic Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized abortions nationwide. The decision challenged a Texas statute that made it a crime to perform an abortion, unless a woman’s life was in danger. The Supreme Court’s ruling recognized for the first time that the constitutional right to privacy “is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decisions whether or not to terminate her pregnancy (Roe v. Wade, 1973).”

On the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the White House issued a statement reaffirming their commitment to protect the health and reproductive freedom of women across this country and stand by their guiding principle: “that government should not intrude on our most private family matter, and women should be able to make their own choices about their bodies and their healthcare.”  In his second inaugural address, President Obama made headlines by addressing human rights issues such as gay marriage, yet a women’s right to choose still remains a highly contested issue in this country.

The Pew Research Center found that 63 percent of Americans support Roe v. Wade, opposed to the 29 percent who believe it should be over turned. According to Pew, these opinions have changed little from surveys taken in 2003 and 1992. Despite majority support for Roe v. Wade and the pro-choice movement, the pro-life movement remains as active as ever. Just this past year alone, we have seen some of the most vicious attacks on women’s health and rights. From over 1,000 restrictive reproductive health bills being introduced in legislatures nationwide, to discussion surrounding “legitimate” rape, reproductive health issues continue to be a hard-fought political battle. With the state of Vermont currently undergoing serious health care reform, supporters of Roe vs. Wade should continue their fight to ensure reproductive health and freedom for all Americans.

In Vermont, over 50 supporters of access to reproductive healthcare and legislators came to the State House in solidarity with women’s health advocates from the past, present and future to gather at the Vermont State House in Montpelier to show their support for choice and access to reproductive health care. With the state underoing major health care reform, it’s now more important than ever to ensure that acess to reproductive health care is a top priority for legislators.

Tuesday, January, 22nd marks the 40thanniversary of Roe v Wade the landmark Supreme Court decision that ruled that the right to privacy in the U.S. Constitution protects the women’s ability to choose whether to continue a pregnancy to term or to have an abortion. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England is honored to invite you to a special day of advocacy and remembrance in honor of this important date in the fight for equality and human rights.
