URGENT: Governor Paul LePage vetoes important women’s health bill!

Demonstrating just how far he will go to oppose a woman’s ability to make personal and private decisions about her health care,  Governor Paul LePage vetoed LD 1247 – the Maine Women’s Health Initiative, a widely-supported, bipartisan bill that would ensure that more than ten thousand low-income women have access to a wide-range of preventive health services, including lifesaving cancer screenings, annual exams, birth control, testing and treatment for STDs, Pap test and sexual health information.

This is just another example of Governor Paul LePage playing politics with women’s health, and your Maine legislators need to know that supporting the Governor’s veto is unacceptable.

On May 1st your Maine Representative and Senator will vote on whether or not to side with the Governor’s blatant anti-women agenda, or to override his veto of LD 1247, ensuring that Maine women have access to preventative and lifesaving health care. We need you to take action IMMEDIATELY to tell your legislators that you demand they stand with Maine women by voting to override the Governor’s veto of LD 1247 – the Maine Women’s Health Initiative.

To contact your legislators about this issue follow these five steps:

Step 1) Click here to look up the names of your legislators and their contact information.

Step 2) Find out where your legislator stands! Click here to see whether or not your Senator supported LD 1247 in the first vote and here for your Representative.

Step 3) Call your legislator and tell them that you’re counting on their vote to override the Governor’s veto of LD 1247! You can tell them that this bill isn’t about politics, instead it’s a chance for us to advance women’s health and provide access to essential health care including birth control to more than ten thousand low-income women.

If your legislator(s) voted in support of LD 1247 make sure to thank them for their support! Maine’s lawmakers really value the support they get from their constituents and a simple “thank you for voting for women’s health” goes a long, long way.

If your legislator voted against LD 1247, your call and email is a great opportunity to start a conversation about these issues and why they are so important to you. Share your story, listen to theirs and let them know that their vote against women’s health concerns you. These conversations are critical in opening the minds of your elected officials!

Step 4) Make sure that your legislators get the message; click here to send a follow up email to your Senator and Representative.

Step 5) Make sure that your friends and family know about this opportunity to advance women’s health in Maine! Share a link to this page on Facebook or Twitter, and ask your network to take action!

This vote is going to be close, and your legislators need to hear from you! We need your help to send a message loud and clear to the Maine Legislature; voting to support the Governor’s veto of LD 1247 is a vote against women’s health, and a vote against Maine women.
