Act now to advance women’s health in Maine!

This year the 126th Maine Legislature has the opportunity to advance women’s health in a big way!

LD 1247 – the Maine Women’s Health Initiative – ensures that women with low-income have access to critical disease prevention and essential preventative health services including lifesaving cancer screenings, annual exams, birth control, prevention, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, breast health care, Pap tests, sexual health education, information and health counseling while generating significant cost savings for the state.

Talking Points

  • LD 1247 – The Maine Women’s Health Initiative – will improve the health of women and create healthy families.
This bill ensures access to critical disease prevention and essential health care for low-income, under-insured and uninsured women and men who desperately need health care.
  • LD 1247 – The Maine Women’s Health Initiative – empowers women to space their children and make personal decisions about when and if to start a family.
This bill will prevent unintended pregnancy, support healthy birth spacing, reduce health disparities and lower maternal morbidity. Conservative estimates find that LD 1247 will reduce the number of unintended pregnancies in Maine by 320 in the first year and 1,060 in three years with the number of abortions expected to fall by 350 in that same time frame.
  • LD 1247 – The Maine Women’s Health Initiative – will pay for itself and save the state money!
Maine families and the government both benefit from LD 1247. For every dollar invested in women’s preventative health care, Maine tax payers save $4 by reducing the number and costs associated with unintended pregnancy. In 2006, Maine tax payers spent more than $11 million on the health care costs associated with unintended pregnancy. Additionally these services are reimbursed by the federal government at a rate of $9 for every $1 of state funds spent. The 30 states that have implemented this program have all seen significant cost savings for the state. In Maine, first year savings are conservatively estimated to be nearly $100,000 and by year three, the state could save nearly $2 million.

Thank you for taking action on this important opportunity to advance women’s health and ensure that Maine women have the resources that they need to properly plan for their families.
