PPNNE Applauds U.S. Supreme Court Overturning of DOMA

June 26, 2013 –

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England applauds the U.S. Supreme Court for overturning the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) . The landmark five-to-four outcome is a historic ruling for equality. Reproductive rights are deeply connected to civil rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. We have long stood with LGBT people – many of whom turn to Planned Parenthood for health care, information, and education – in the fight for full equality. PPNNE played an integral role in passing marriage equality in Vermont and Maine and affiliates across the country have been front and center on moving equality forward.

This country is seeing extraordinary progress on marriage equality, rooted in principles that underlie the work Planned Parenthood does every day: that politicians should not get to decide what your family looks like, and that rights in this country should not depend on the state where you live. Today, we celebrate this ruling and commit to ensuring that all LGBT people are safe, supported, and respected. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England will continue to stand at the forefront of the fight for equality.
